One of the nice things about the move to Grand Rapids is that one of my good friends and golfing buddies, Dave, is from Holland ... just a stone's throw away. And since his parents still live there they come back to visit occasionally, meaning we get to see them a little more often than we otherwise might. Although knowing how difficult it is to take a long car ride with one child, I can't imagine in the near future once Aubrey gets a little older how much more difficult that will become.
But last month they came back home for what Dave said was to visit his family, but I know it was really so he and I could play golf and eat crawfish. As you might have seen from his blog, I mistakenly bought this cheap, plastic golf trophy as the prize for when we get together. So far I'm 0-for-3. I shot rounds of 88 and 80 and neither were good enough to bring home the trophy.
The Lunns invited us over for a bbq afterwards. Jillian was sure it was so that our daughters could hang out and play, but I know Dave just wanted to rub the trophy in my face, in front of my own child. Any doubt was removed when he had Sara come meet us in the driveway with the trophy in her hand. It's a shame those wonderful little girls have to deal with such an ignoramus for a father.
The bbq was a lot of fun minus Dave's shenanigans. Some of the funnier moments were when Megan became jealous when Jillian had a chance to hold little Aubrey. Her face was one of confusion as she tried to figure out why her mommy had another baby in her lap. She was literally frozen for a few seconds, analyzing the situation, before rushing over to Jillian's leg and began her usual bleating to be held, baby in lap be damned. "Eh, EH, EH, EH!"
I witnessed her fascination with bubbles. She loved to run after and chase them, catch them, and even tried to taste them. Blech. There was even some impromptu home run derby being played with Dave's nephews and Megan just stood by the pitcher in the middle of the action just watching the ball whizz over, through, and around her. I'm amazed by her fearlessness in situations. I don't know if it's because we've done such a good job of making her feel safe in any environment that she can take risks knowing she won't get hurt or if it's just something innate within her, but it's crazy to watch. For instance she'll STAND in her rocking chair and start rocking it. Then she'll let go and sort of "surf" the chair. It makes my heart seize up, but she just laughs.
Alas, their trip had to come to end so we said goodbye to the Lunns (and good riddance to Dave's ego). I promise to only be half as obnoxious with the trophy celebrating when I win it ... if I win it.

Brian,
Just so you know a week ago at Legendary Run, I chalked up a 72. And yes...that was 18 holes. I'm amazing and I love my ego.
